The Backlot Tour takes you behind the scenes to see how many of the special effects you see in the movies are created. Your first stop is a large water tank where a stormy scene is about to be filmed. A few lucky (?) guests are recruited from the audience to participate, and after a bit of preparation they’ll find themselves on the set, filming a scene recreating an intense storm–complete with crashing waves and gale force winds. It’s a good thing rain coats are provided!
Afterwards, it’s time to board the tram that will take you on a tour through the many backstage areas. Eventually you’ll make your way to Catastrophe Canyon, where you’ll see a thrilling special effects display complete with massive explosions and flash floods!

Your last stop is the American Film Institute Showcase, where you can explore a variety of exhibits featuring costumes and props made famous by some of the most notorious villains in cinematic history. These characters include Darth Vader, Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare before Christmas, and the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz.

Some of the effects in Catastrophe Canyon can be a little scary. The Tour itself is very long (about 25 minutes), and it’s mostly walking.
