May

| Origins: |
This area of the
park was originally known as New York Street,
and served as a large movie set where several
feature films and TV shows were produced. Originally,
guests could only experience New York Street
via the Backstage Studios Tour in trams, although
if no filming was taking place guests were
permitted to walk through. |
| Updates: |
As the popularity
of the Disney's Hollywood Studios increased, New York
Street was permanently opened to the public
and several attractions were subsequently added.
The New York facade has been joined by a San
Francisco set (complete with a replica of the
Golden Gate Bridge in the background), and
a Chicago set is rumored to be in the works.
As a result, the area was recently renamed
the Streets of America.
In 1995, the Disney's Hollywood Studios presented the
Osbourn Family Spectacle of Lights, a spectacular
holiday celebration
in which over 5 million (!) Christmas lights
are lit up all along New York Street. The Osbourn
Family Spectacle of Lights has since became
a favorite Walt Disney World Christmas tradition. |
