The Beauty and the Beast stage show made its debut in Disneyland in 1992 (a year after the feature film was released). The show proved so popular that it inspired the development of the live Broadway production, which began its run concurrent to the debut of the Disney's Hollywood Studios version. The Broadway show is still running, having played nearly 5,000 performances. It is currently the longest running American musical on Broadway, and the sixth longest running show in Broadway history

Beauty and the Beast owns the distinction of being the only animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award®.
