Opened:
|
December
15, 1973 as part of the Caribbean Plaza expansion. |
| Origins: |
Pirates of the Caribbean
was one of the original attractions at Disneyland
and one of the last that Walt Disney himself oversaw.
Originally, Pirates wasn't to be included in the
Magic Kingdom for fear that Florida residents (being
in such close proximity to the actual Caribbean),
wouldn't find it exotic enough. Disney later acquiesced
to
public demand (Pirates of the Caribbean
was one of the most popular attractions at Disneyland),
and construction was soon under way. |
| Updates: |
Pirates of the Caribbean
has undergone minor refurbishments throughout the
years to make the attraction more politically correct.
The most notable change occured in one of the town
sequences where pirates could originally be seen
chasing after the town's women. This was later
modified
so that
the pirates were running through the houses collecting
treasure, except for one unfortunate soul who
is now himself being pursued by the lady of the
house!
The attraction was currently updated to
incorporate characters from the Disney hit movie
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the
Black Pearl (including Jack Sparrow himself)
into the tour. It
reopened on July 7, 2006 to coincide with the
premiere of the much anticipated sequel, Pirates
of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Apart from the additions of some new Audio-Animatronic
figures (some of the best that Disney has produced),
and some new special effects, the attraction itself
remained largely unchanged, which was good news
for fans
of the
classic
attraction (it is still a slow, dark, relaxing
boat ride). One of the
more
notable changes was a refurbishment of the
large pirate ship. It now more closely resembles
the Black Pearl and is under the command of none
other than Captain Barbossa
himself! |
