Cinderella Castle is
the very symbol of Walt Disney World and as such
was always an integral part of the design of the
Magic Kingdom. Along with Main Street, it was one
of the first structures constructed, ground being
broken in 1969.
Many years of research went into
the design of the castle, headed up by Disney legend
Herbert Ryman. Taking his inspiration from famous
real life castles (including Chambord, Ussé,and
Chenonceau, all in France) and of course from the
film Cinderella, he developed a charcoal sketch
which, through further
research
and refinement,
evolved into a famous concept painting that served
as the basis for the final design.
The construction of Cinderella Castle took 18 months
to complete, partly due to the fact that Disney
craftsmen were left to work out the fabrication
details on their own (since no one was in the habit
of building 189 foot tall castles!). Construction
went smoothly, however, and soon the last of the
ten towering spires was slid into place, the crowning
touch on one of the most famous structures in the
entire world. |

In 1996 Cinderella
Castle was decorated like a giant
birthday cake in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Walt
Disney World Resort.
As a whimsical tribute to the opening of Stitch's
Great Escape on November 16, 2004, Cinderella Castle
was strewn
with toilet paper and the words "Stitch is King" was spray
painted on one of the main turrets. Stitch's mischief
was soon cleaned up however; the decorations only
lasted for one day
Cinderella Castle was decked out in a breathtaking facade
of polished gold trim, colorful swags, banners and tapestries
in celebration
of Disneyland's 50th anniversary. The new
decorations were unveiled
in May, 2005.
On April 28, 1997, King Stefan's Banquet Hall changed its name to
Cinderella's Royal Table (after all, King Stefan is Sleeping Beauty's
father, not Cinderella's!). |
