The Disney empire may
have been started by a mouse, but the original
inspiration for Disneyland and the parks that followed
came from a merry-go-round. Walt Disney used
to take his daughters to a place called Griffith
Park when they were young. Walt would often sit
on a bench and watch his daughters ride the merry-go-round.
It was then that he got the inspiration for creating
a place where the whole family could play and have
fun together, and this the seeds of the Disneyland
concept were planted in Walt's mind. The rest,
as they say, is history
The carrousel
itself was built
in 1917
by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (making
it the oldest attraction in the Magic Kingdom).
Originally created for Palace Gardens in Detroit,
it was relocated to Olympic Park
in Maplewood, New Jersey
in 1928 where it was discovered by Disney scouts
in 1967.
A painstaking restoration followed, with many of
the original wooden horses being
replaced
by fiberglass
models.
Additionally, 18 hand-painted
scenes were added to the wooden canopy that tell
the story of Cinderella. |
| Updates: |
In 1997, the Carrousel
was slightly renovated, adding back one of the
chariots that had been removed in the
original
restoration to accommodate physically challenged
guests. |
