Opened:
October 1, 1971 (with the rest of the Magic Kingdom)
Origins: Frontierland was inspired by the adventuresome spirit that drove the pioneers westward from the 1770s to the 1880s. Frontierland pays tribute to several American frontiers, including the old South, the Mississippi River and the desert Southwest.

This pioneer spirit was brought to life by the Davy Crockett series of television shows produced by Walt Disney, which in turn helped to inspire the original Frontierland in Disneyland.
Updates: Frontierland has seen several large-scale renovations over the years. In 1973 the Richard F. Irvine steamboat was launched on the Rivers of America, home to Tom Sawyer Island which also opened that year.

1980 saw the next renovation of Frontierland with the construction of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. 12 years later, the Frontierland Railroad Station was demolished and rebuilt, paving the way for the third Magic Kingdom mountain, Splash Mountain.
