Opened:

Origins: One of Walt Disney's greatest loves was model trains. So much so that he built a miniature railroad (dubbed the Carolwood-Pacific) around his home and would take house guests an rides around the property.

A railroad circling the entire park was always a given as the plans for Disneyland (and its conceptual predecessor, Riverside park near the Disney Burbank studios) were developed. Naturally, the railroad was also included in the plans for the Magic Kingdom.
Updates: In recent years, the locomotives and several of the passenger cars required extensive renovations. Rather than shut the railroad down, many of the passenger cars were interchanged with the locomotives, thus keeping the railroad in service.

Some of the renovations included the removal of the PA system and conductor's panel from the rear of the third car, leaving the panel on a deck at the rear of the train for safer operation. Side panels were also added to the sides of the coaches.
