| Origins: |
This attraction made
its debut on opening day under the name Grand
Prix Raceway.
The original incarnation of the attraction was
Autopia in Disneyland. At the time, (the 1950s),
Walt Disney felt that an attraction that taught
children how to drive in preparation for the new
international highways was in order. Despite some
early problems
(there were originally no guide rails on the track,
making
for lots of collisions!), the attraction proved
extremely popular and was immediately incorporated
into the original plans for the Magic Kingdom.
By the time the Magic Kingdom opened however,
interstate driving was routine, so the attraction
was slightly altered to take on a racing
theme (reflected in the new name, Grand Prix Speedway). |
| Updates: |
In 1973 the course
was slightly expanded.
In 1988 the speedway received a more substantial
renovation when it was slightly relocated and shortened
to
make way
for Mickey's Birthdayland (known today as MIckey's
Toontown Fair). During that time the name was also
changed to the current Tomorrowland Indy Speedway. |
